What is facet syndrome?

Facet syndrome is the result of friction between your bones which causes tenderness, stiffness, swelling, and pain. If you experience chronic pain in part of your spine located from your neck to your lower back you could have facet syndrome.

Facet syndrome is typically seen in adults who are over the age of 50 and it is generally caused by regular wear and tear. But it does result in arthritis. This is not to say that young adults cannot suffer from the condition, as they very well can especially if this area of their body is prone to injury or overuse.

How does facet syndrome develop?

Facet syndrome develops in the small joints which are located between each of your vertebrae in your spinal column. The small joints are called facet joints. These joints are always in motion and they provide your spine with flexibility and stability that you need to bend, sit, twist, walk, and run. The surfaces of these joints are lined with cartilage and it is this cartilage which allows them to glide with ease atop one another.

As people get older the cartilage will wear down and sometimes bone spurs develop. Friction between your bones can lead to swelling and stiffness. It is through this general aging process that facet syndrome takes place.

When your joint is damaged through injury, trauma, or normal deterioration the joint itself become swollen and painful. The inflammation is often temporary but if your joint is arthritic it can cause long-lasting pain. In addition to this facet syndrome can occur if you are overweight, if you have a family history of it, if you have damage to the region or if you have recently been in a car accident and experience with flash.

It can also include lower back pain which radiates into your pelvic area and your thighs.
